First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

A word from Hunter…

I would like to personally thank you for being so supportive and welcoming to myself and the choir over the past few months.  Having the opportunity to worship with you all and share our spiritual passion for music is a blessing, and we cannot wait to continue to share this with you in more ways in the months and years to come.
As a traditional part of our Advent season, the choir would like to invite you to join us in worship on Sunday, December 18th, at 10 a.m. for the Christmas Cantata. The selection for this year is titled “The Glory of the Lord,” composed by David H. Williams, with text by Carlton C. Buck, and it focuses on The Prophecy, The Fulfillment, and The Adoration of Christ.
In addition to the wonderfully talented and hardworking members of the choir, we will be blessed to welcome a few special guests to participate in worship on the 18th.  Our vocal soloists, all from the University of Oklahoma, are Rachel Snapp, Dorian McCall, and Alex Bolerjack.  We will also have an oboist from OU, Ms. Britany Hansen, as well as a handful of volunteer singers from the Norman area.
We are thrilled to have the opportunity to present this project as a gift from us to the congregation, with the ultimate goal being the adoration of our Lord and Savior. We hope you will join us for this event.

With love and gratitude, Hunter Birkhead

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (which means “God with us.”) His name shall be called wonderful.

Volunteers Needed:

Looking for a “Few Good Volunteers” to be formally trained in the absence of the Administrative Assistant. It would require a commitment of 1 day every 2 months for continuation training and less than another 5 days to fill in during vacation/sick days. If you’re interested or have any questions, please call Cindy Schaefer @ 259-9377.

Refuge will be meeting Monday, December 19th. Please feel free to ride with outreach in the church van if you are interested in attending. The youth will be helping prepare the meal Sunday night, the 18th, for the service. If you are interested in helping out please contact Dustin or Mitsy.

Thanks to everyone that had any part in making this year’s Christmas for Others such a great success!

It takes a great number of volunteers doing a variety of things to put together an event of this magnitude. Outreach appreciates each and everyone of you!!

Our “Emergency Food Kits” were a big success last year because of the loving and giving people in our Church Family.  Now that winter is approaching, we are asking for your help once again.    In order that none of our clients go without food, because we are unable to deliver due to bad weather, we will be preparing “Emergency Food Kits” again this year.  These kits will consist of non-perishable food items for two to three meals.  We have 60 clients, 17 of those clients are diabetic.  Please help us with these kits by donating some of the items listed below.

We will be collecting food items starting Dec. 12th thru Dec. 28th.  There will be a
collection box in the Narthex marked “Mobile Meals Emergency Food Kits”.

Items needed are: canned soups, canned ravioli, Cup ‘O’ Noodles, microwaveable macaroni and cheese cups, packaged peanut butter or cheese crackers, fruit cups, pudding cups, individually packaged cookies, Ensure, or any non-perishable food item that can be eaten cold or easily heated.  Please remember some of the desserts need to be sugar free for our diabetics.

Your donations will be greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions, please contact Dottie Tucker at 610-6959 or 919-4589 (cell).

Peace – One could probably bet that when Mary heard she was chosen to carry God’s son, that Peace was not her first reaction. “How could this be” she asked. We ask that question throughout our life when we’re at anything BUT peace. But Mary could have also said “you know, this isn’t really a good time for me”, instead (I’m sure after some time to absorb the shock) she said “I’m the Lord’s…ready to serve (Luke 1:37). Mary wasn’t looking at what MIGHT be (we know the future held a very difficult life including seeing her son crucified). Instead, what she saw was how God would fill in the pieces for her as time went by. In doing that, Peace was able to come over her in a time of great confusion. Without Jesus, we can hope for things to be better, but with Jesus we can experience the peace because his love makes it better. That peace comes as part of a leap of faith in trusting that the Lord will help provide for us in our time of need.

Father, we can’t see into the future, we don’t know what to do. We want to experience your perfect peace. Hold us God, so we can hear you say “You don’t have to know the way. I do”. Amen.

(Chris Miller, Worship Chair)
