An Advent word of Love from Mike…

John 13.34-35    I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’

Does God love us?

We are taught the resounding YES! to this question, from the youngest of ages. If you grew up in the church some of the first songs you learned were likely Jesus Loves Me and Jesus Loves the Little Children.

Why does God love us?

My impulsive response is a sincere, “Heaven only knows!”

As obvious as the first question is, the second is one that still raises more questions than answers. Good luck finding a list of reasons for WHY God loves us in your Bible, regardless of the version. Scripture is full of affirmations of God’s love for us, but where is the explanation as to what is lovable about us?

Our Wednesday night Bible study group has been studying the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon).
Never have I taught this book, but I have enjoyed the opportunity to dig for a deeper understanding of this unique set of scriptures. The book is full of exaggerated flattery, yet still teaches us about the depth of God’s gift of love. I believe the Song of Songs also gives us some insight into how God loves. I don’t fully understand the WHY(s), but I am confident I can feel that love, and I am thankful for the comfort it gives.

I pray for you that type of understanding, and that type of LOVE, in this Advent season.
Thanks for sharing the journey,

Mike

Joy

Joy, so wonderful, but yet so fleeting. It is something influenced by others, but also a choice from within. God’s joy is unwavering. But we can make the choice to live a life of distrust, anger, and fear or to pursue Joy. God is our rock and is the one doing the heavy lifting for us. But we have to be able to trust in him that he will be there; something that can be extremely difficult for us to do. We easily reject what we do not agree with or want. What would have happened if the inn keeper had denied the stable to Mary and Joseph because they could not pay? What would have happened had the king of Nineveh not taken Jonah’s word to heart? “Fear not”! So easy to say, yet so difficult to do. When we’re faced with difficult choices, fear of what might be is so natural and yet also can be so poisonous. Take a look at those things that bring you Joy, encourage others so you might bring them Joy, and express your Joy.

Lord, thank you for your son, Jesus. Thank you for the joy that remembering Jesus’ birth brings us. Help us to live in a way that we might bring joy to others as you have brought to us. Amen.

(Chris Miller, Worship Chair)
