A Word from Mike…

Acts 21.8   The next day we left and came to Caesarea; and we went into the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the seven, and stayed with him.

During our sermon series on the journeys of Paul, several scriptures impacted me in a new way.  Sometimes the impact came because I understood the scriptures in a new historical light, others I had forgotten. The we in the passage above includes Paul, Luke and of course Philip. Philip, one of the seven who had been previously set apart as a spiritual leader to help the followers remain faithful to those in need. Who else was a part of that seven, but of course Stephen. Stephen who was stoned to death in front of Saul (Paul) who stood by approvingly (Act 6 & 7). To use the old expression, wouldn’t you have enjoyed being the fly on the wall at Philip’s over those few days!

Imagine Philip and all he had to process in order to extend that type of grace. Likely you have extended that type of undeserved grace.

Imagine Paul and all that he had to process in order to receive that type of grace. Likely you have been the recipient of that undeserved grace.

Imagine Luke, the one who loves small details, sitting in the potential of tension between Philip and Paul. Likely, you have sat in that tension before with others who had the chance to make peace or make conflict.

Scripture can be complicated, but scripture is clear about relationships and the effort to be peacemakers. People at times can “feast” on gossip and stirring the pot to add drama. May we be the peacemakers God has called us to be, both offering grace and receiving grace. May this be our witness!

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

Light a Candle for Children 2016
Prayer Vigil – Week #3

Light a candle for children marks a time in the year when we make a special effort to be intentional about praying and giving thanks for the children in our lives.October 16th we will bring the prayer vigil to a close with the Children’s Sabbath and the Children’s Corner Birthday celebration!  By that time, our church will have its very own pumpkin patch!

Did you know a pumpkin can teach us how to pray for children?  As you turn a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern, you can pray these five prayers. This is week three.
So this week lets join together in the following prayer:

Week 3:
(Imagine carving a nose in a soon to be jack-o-lantern.)

Pray:  Lord, let the children take time to smell the roses and remember they are blessed like the lilies of the field.

Verse:  Matthew 6:33   But seek God and His righteousness first, and everything else will fall into place.
