A Word from Mike…

Job 38.36   Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind?

Two Saturday’s ago I had the blessed honor to preach the ordination service for a friend of mine. In the days of her young adulthood she seemed to have a Midas-like touch. She was academically gifted, sang with a beautiful voice, and was very attractive.  She became Miss Indiana and competed in the Miss America Pageant. Then one day, while driving her prized red corvette, a semi-truck hit her at full speed from behind, as she sat at a stop sign. The    result was tragic, and while she looked the same, she had to have part of her brain removed. The part of her brain that was removed was the temporal lobe which scientists insist contains our ability to believe in a God, and to feel compassion towards others.  Some refer to this lobe as “The God Spot” and the procedure of removal as a “Godectomy.”

Part of the obstacles she faced following the surgery included epileptic seizures. Seizures that turned her parents from the pride of having a daughter who had appeared in the Miss    America Pageant to the shame of having a daughter whose seizures they interpreted as demon possession.

As sad as this story sounds, the full story is even worse. However, in her Job-like assault, she received a Godly call and is applying it to her life journey. What seemed to be a curse, has turned into the opportunity to be a blessing to others. In a recent book she wrote the following: “Finding a way to give back is the next bright thing to do as you are discovering the  beauty inside of you.  Bright doesn’t necessarily translate as intellectual brilliance, but as that which brings light and goodness to yourself and others”.
I pray for you that type of brightness, that type of HOPE, in this advent season.

Thanks for sharing the journey,

Love – The “Three Kings” came to visit Jesus, knowing that they loved him before they had even met him. They arrived, not at a castle, but at a manger. When they laid their eyes on him, they bowed out of reverence but also out of unconditional love and each presented a gift. The gifts, although very valuable, stood as a metaphor. The kings were giving themselves wholly to Jesus, this baby just born very publically among animals and their hay. Having already giving themselves to Jesus, giving the gifts was easy. Paul later asks the church in Corinth to give to the needy church in Jerusalem. As part of the offertory request, he reminds them of the grace God gave to the Macedonians who gave amidst extreme poverty. The Macedonians also gave themselves before they gave their gifts and as Jesus said “where your treasure is, your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

Lord, help us to show our love for you and what you do through our giving and love to others.
