REFLECTIONS…

… on Hospitality

One of the strengths of FCC is the openness to diversity. If we were all the same we would not be Disciples of Christ but some other denomination. We strive to include people as best we are able. One thing has come to our attention is that there are times and situations when some people are not able to physically hold the cup for communion. It could be a temporary situation where one has a cast or other thing preventing them from being able to grasps a cup and remove it.

There are also times when individuals may be suffering from an ailment or a condition making it impossible to hold a small cup without spilling it. In an effort to make it possible for all to receive from the Table, we are going to have a portion of the bread from the Table on each tray so that a deacon or a neighbor can take a piece and dip it into the cup (the form known as intinction) and serve it. (Actually, anyone is welcome to take tear a piece from the bread instead of the small cracker type bread.)

This is not simply an introduction of another method for communion but an act of hospitality. In reading the Hebrew Testament and also the Christian Testament, one of the overriding sins is the sin of
in-hospitality. Traveling the dusty roads and dealing with the heat of the desert, to receive a traveler was an ultimate act of hospitality. The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was the sin of in-hospitality. The church is to welcome all but to say it and do it are two different things.

Too often the church (church universal) will make glowing proclamations but not follow through with making it a reality. It is one of our goals to actually extend our abilities to be more inclusive. We have seen this with our efforts of feeding, Christmas for All, communication through the internet and other ways.

On another note, the response of the congregation is providing for Lisa Holland Larkin’s service was a gracious act of hospitality. When a funeral home is not involved in a service it can be difficult to attend to all the pieces. With the help of the Pairs and Spares, Carol Morrison on piano, the Rev. Leslie Brown and others, the service was a fine tribute to Lisa’s life.

Equally, the response of the congregation to the Valentine Dinner sponsored by the Youth was well attended and enjoyed. Neil Whyte entertained with wonderful music during the meal. And the Youth did a superb job of setting up tables and serving the meal. A special thanks to Bret Moler for his culinary expertise with the brisket, Julie Moler, Beverly and Michael Rubino, AND all the youth. Great evening of food and fun.
