   The Fishing Club…
Sunday’s scripture in Luke (5:1-11) reminded me of the following story.

There was a group that called themselves, The Fishing Club. In their club headquarters, there were fish symbols galore, hooks and nets and floats and rods. All the members of the club wore old hats with fish lures stuck in them, and tall wading boots which got quite uncomfortable on warm days. But they were proud to be fishing people and so they never took them off.

They had a well-stocked library of books about fishing. And several times a year they ran seminars to which noted world fishing people were invited to come and deliver learned lectures. All the talk and all the activities at the club centered around fishing.

But then one day, the club had a new member. They had not had a new member for some time, so this was a new experience. And the new member asked an interesting question. “When do you go fishing?”

Well, it turned out, the members of the Fishing Club had never caught a fish. In fact, they had never actually seen a live fish. And the idea that they should actually go out there in a boat or wade into the water came as quite a shock to them. They had long meetings on the subject and eventually came to the conclusion that the new member would have to leave. The new member obviously knew very little about what it really meant to be a member of the Fishing Club.

It is by faith that we follow. It is by faith that we take up the call given to each of us. It is a call that must be lived out. It cannot be simply talked about, studied and graded. It must be lived. Each of us are called to specific ministries in the church. We are not asked to give up everything, all our possessions, but you are commanded to make Jesus first in your life. Perhaps that is a decision we need to make or remake this day. We may have said so once, but it needs to be renewed each week. Will we serve with Peter, James and John?
