A Word from Mike…

Joel 2.12-17    Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.

WELCOME TO LENT!  While many of you will read this message after Ash Wednesday has passed, we are officially entering the days of Lent.  Much in the same way that Advent is about the anticipation of Christmas, Lent is about the anticipation of Easter.  The mood for the seasons is much different.  The excitement and joy of Christmas is consuming in nature.  The heart wrenching weeping and mourning, the realization of mortality and our sinful nature, are more difficult themes to embrace.  Yes, both holidays have the high point of festive celebration, but do you really WANT to absorb Lent as much as you do Advent?

At this point in my life, I find Lent to be my favorite of the two seasons.  Maybe Christmas has become too commercial to really “move me” as it has in past years.  The experience of Ash Wednesday and offering the words, “As you have come from the dust, to the dust you shall return; Repent and believe the Good news,” is very meaningful for me.  Lent offers an intense self-evaluation of our faith journey.  This is also a season that gives us the opportunity for confession and holding ourselves accountable for our wrong doing.  In the midst of the need for confession comes the assurance that when we turn to God, our repentance is received with grace, mercy and love.  I pray for us, I pray for you, the challenge of an authentic evaluation of faith this Lent; that in response, Easter might provide you an explosion of joy and understanding in the grace of a risen Christ.

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

Youth Yak
Hello FCC!!!

On behalf of the Youth of this congregation I want to simply say THANK YOU for your generosity and support for our “Super Subs” fundraiser.  I know that we got a little bit of a late start in accepting orders for the sandwiches and I am so grateful that you chose to support our Youth in this way.  We truly could not do the things that we do without your support and encouragement.  THANK YOU!!!

Some updates:

Our new room in the JCAC is really coming together!  If you haven’t had an opportunity to swing by and check it out recently I invite you to do so.  We will be continuing to add items in the coming weeks to make it feel more and more like “home.”

Our CYF and Chi Rho Groups WILL NOT meet this Wednesday, Feb. 10 due to Ash Wednesday services that will take place here at FCC at 7:00 p.m.  YOUTH, you are encouraged to come share in this service.

This Sunday, Feb. 14, the Youth (CYF/Chi Rho) will be departing immediately following Second Service to head out for an afternoon of team building and problem solving at “The Escape OKC.”  We will be out from about noon to 3:00ish and this will serve as our Youth Group time for the day.

Grace and Peace,

Aaron

A Note from Imogene Nikkel…

Dear Church Family,
I am going to church with my Daughter and Son in Law in Henderson, Nevada. It is the Central Christian Church. I go on Saturday evening as they have lots of different church times and that is the best time for my family. I am feeling some better, just will take time. Miss you all – Imogene
