In this second ministerial career, as a senior minister, I have truly grown to enjoy sermon preparation. This past week the sermon titled, “The Rough Side of God”, is a topic I will continue to wrestle with in days ahead. I will be wrestling with the challenge of acknowledging some unpleasant passages of scripture against the larger picture of the Bible as a whole.
Many people expressed that they were unaware the cry of Jesus stating, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,” is a reference back to Psalm 22. For me, it is exciting to introduce others to scripture connections. I find that the longer and more deeply I study scripture, the more revelations I find. In doing so, I am continually reminded that those new revelations come with the backdrop of a consistent truth of God’s provision and love.
While God’s provision may not always be a rainfall of lemon drops and gum drops (as sung during our children’s sermon), we know that the rain storms of our life will come and go. We know that the sun will rise again, just as the Son rose again.
I pray we all continue to be challenged, to grow in our faith and to increase in our appreciation of God’s provision for us and our community.
Thanks for sharing the Journey! Mike
Happy February! I just have a few things for you as we gear up for this last month of winter…
First. THANK YOU to ALL who agreed on such short notice to purchase sub sandwiches from our youth. It truly is a testament to how much you love and support our youth ministry that you are willing and able to do such things with very little (if any) advance notice. The funds that we raise from the sale of these sandwiches will help pay for our Summer Mission Trip to Denver, CO and to help support those who want to go to camp next summer. Our youth ministry only happens because of your support. I am so grateful for you. The sandwiches will be available for pick-up after each worship service on Sunday, Feb. 7
Second. Last Sunday afternoon our CYF and Chi Rho took a trip over to the Tinker Bowling Alley. THANK YOU to Brett Moler for helping set that up and to Bev Rubino and Tammy Cook for helping with transportation. It was cool to not only get to go play with the kids and demonstrate just how terrible I am at bowling but to also get to meet the youth group of Tinker Chapel.
Third. We are in need of volunteers to help provide meals for Wednesday night youth group in March and April. There is a sign up sheet on the table in the Narthex. THANK YOU in advance for helping to support our ministry.
FINALLY. Our CYF and Chi Rho Groups will meet at 5:00 this Sunday night (as usual) here at the church. We may run a little long, but we’ll play the night by ear.
Grace and Peace,
