REFLECTIONS

…hiding good deeds

We are entering my favorite liturgical season: Lent. Lent is the season for contemplation, self examination and reflection. Not counting Sundays and beginning on Ash Wednesday, it last for forty days. Forty days has several meanings in scripture. Often it means a long time just as 3 days means a short time. For this season forty represents the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness.

Ash Wednesday follows what is called Fat Tuesday, so named because you eat as much as you can. The traditional food of choice is pancakes and is the last day to enjoy before ‘giving up’ something, usually certain foods. Giving up something for Lent has long been a practice among different groups and individuals.

Some people will use the time to give up smoking or chocolates or soft drinks in an effort for it to become permanent. Giving up something is a means of sacrifice helping us to get closer to Jesus and appreciating his sacrifice for us. Another practice that has been adopted is to take on something rather than give up something. Instead of giving up something for Lent, how about finding something to do to deepen your spiritual life.

And now comes the tricky part. The scripture that begins Lent (Ash Wednesday) is Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21. Here is verses 1 and 2: “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

So a spiritual discipline might be doing something for others without them knowing you are the source. The only one who will know your good act is the recipient and God. Actually, this sounds like it may be a bit difficult to do… so there is the challenge. Welcome to Lent.

Start off with us at our Cantata Bootcamp/Choir Social on Saturday, March 9th here at the church from 9-5. Yes, there’s food!!

Contact Mark or ask any of our handsome and lovely choir members about joining us — a for a song or for a season — all are welcome!

Oh, and can’t carry a tune in a bucket?
Come on anyway — we’ll provide the buckets!!

A Request from the
Sr. Minister Search Committee:

Please return your Congregational Profile Information form to the church office no later than March 17, so the data may be entered into our church records. This information gives potential applicants a broad picture of our church family and is used to fill out one section of the Congregational Survey we are to provide to the Regional Office. Profile forms can be found in the church narthex (main entry).

Please call any one of the Search Committee members if you have questions. Contact information is listed on the Sr. Minister poster in the narthex.

Thank you
