 …on Stations of the Cross
   What are the Stations of the Cross? Isn’t that something Catholics, Lutherans and Episcopalians do?
   It is a form of devotion. The Reformation was a time of rebellion to the ‘old’ ways of doing things. Separating from the Catholic Church was a protest and thus the name Protestants.
   So we moved away from a ritualistic form of worship to a more simplistic form. In doing so, we left many of the art forms and clung to reason. Protestants left the pageantry and embraced the cerebral.
   The sermon became more important than any other part of the liturgy. Sermons became long and didactic. The Word triumphed over Sacrament.
   In the process, we also lost much of the beauty, the devotion of worship. Devotion is a discipline, such as daily Bible reading, or the reading of material to help deeper our relationship with God. Prayer is an act of devotion.
The Stations of the Cross are also known as the Way of the Cross or the Way of Sorrows encompassing a series of 14 images beginning with the condemnation of Jesus to death. These images attempt to imagine the Via Dolorosa, the road or path Jesus took to the crucifixion.

1. Christ condemned to death;

2. the cross is laid upon him;

3. His first fall;

4. He meets his Mother;

5. Simon of Cyrene is made to bear the cross;

6. Christ’s face is wiped by Veronica;

7. His second fall;

8. He meets the women of Jerusalem;

9. His third fall;

10. He is stripped of his garments;

11. His crucifixion;

12. His death on the cross;

13. His body is taken down from the cross; and

14. laid in the tomb.
   There are several versions including one introduced by Pope John Paul II in 1991 which he called the Biblical as opposed to the Traditional.
   The Protestant one begins with the Upper Room and ends not with the tomb, but with the Resurrection.
   The stations are for us to use as a devotion, to deepen our understanding of the evens in Holy Week and our appreciation for the gift of Christ.
   Devotions are for everyone, as is Christ.
