REFLECTIONS….

 …on Sunday and Searching

Sunday was a glorious day for the congregation. We literally experienced darkness to light as the sanctuary was transformed from a tomb to a thing of beauty and celebration.

The choir has put in many hours for the Palm Sunday Cantata and the anthem on the Sunday. Ben Walters played trumpet exceptionally well for the offertory. Tom Wilson baptized his granddaughter Ava Taylor Wilson, and Chad and Joyce Orgaard placed their membership in the congregation.

And ever before all this took place, there was the Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday and the Sunrise Service Easter morning with over 25 in attendance. All a testament to a living, lively and loving congregation.

The Search Committee is in the full process of discerning the ‘right’ person to become the Pastor of our congregation.

Discerning is a process of making choices guided by God’s Spirit. First Thessalonians (5:21-22) says, “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil.”

In 1 John (4:1) we also read a similar admonition: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

In the process of discovering the right person and for the person to determine the right congregation, we have to learn about each other.

The Committee looks at and profiles and recommendations, prays about the choice and then begins conversations.

It is important for the candidate to be able to know about our congregation.

      What makes us unique?
Is the church an exciting one and why?
How is the Spirit of God felt in the work and worship of First Christian?

A great exercise is to answer these questions for yourself. The answers do not have to be long.

Each member should be able to give a short answer to each of these questions. We each should know why we are here.

The questions can also include, why one would want to come to Midwest City.

The task of a Search Committee is onerous. It takes time, prayer and commitment. Don’t ask the Committee about any information because they are bound to confidentiality. When the time is right, when the ‘right’ person has been recognized, then the candidate of choice will be shared for your consideration and call.

Pray for the Search Committee… and don’t forget to think on the questions above.

Rev. Larry B. Metzger
