A Word from Mike…

Is your house still decorated with Easter Bunny’s, colorful eggs and are you still giving your kids Easter candy?!?  After all, you do remember that WE ARE STILL CELEBRATING EASTER, right?!?

You have noticed that in recent Sundays we have continually made reference to Eastertide.  Easter is actually the beginning of Eastertide. The season starts with the “Great Paschal Vespers.”  The focus of this time, as the prayer indicates, is not about the death of Christ….but the “what now.”  The festival is an active response to Jesus’ death.  The Second through the Sixth Sundays of Easter are a continuation of the festival of the celebration of God’s love for us shown through the gift of his Son.  The proofs for the gift of a resurrected Christ are evident in events while Christ stays on earth 40 days after the resurrection.  During this time Jesus appears to the disciples and select others.  These are days truly to be celebrated and an expression of thanks.

If you read Acts 1.1-9 you will find that at after 40 days Christ ascended into heaven.  This event, Ascension Day, was celebrated as a festival and feast.  According to St. Augustine, this celebration was started with the disciples.  After the day of ascension, ten days pass before Pentecost took place.  Pentecost is the birth of the “church”, a spiritual unification among believers through the presence of the Holy Spirit. This time period is what is referred to as “The Great 50 Days.” Easter itself is not just a day, it is a 7 week season of the church year.  It covers 8 Sundays, which was considered a mystical sign of eternity.  Events of The Great 50 days are shown in all four Gospels, but most completely through the authorship of Luke.  Most details for The Great 50 Days are given progressively though the 24th chapter of Luke and the first two chapters of Acts.

Remember, we are in a season of joyful celebration and thanks.  May that attitude be reflected in each Eastertide day we face!

Thanks for sharing the journey – Mike
