REFLECTIONS…

 …on Godparents

There is a tradition in Mexico with a cake called the Three Kings’ Cake. A figure of Baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake. There are churches that also practice this tradition and the one who finds Jesus gets a prize.

However, in Mexico, whoever finds the baby Jesus in their piece of cake is the ‘Godparent’ of Jesus for that year.

What an awesome responsibility.

Our church does not generally practice the role of Godparent. In some other denominations a Godparent is one who agrees to take on the role of looking after a child’s best interest if something should happen to the parents. The role of Godparent also has the obligation to see after the Christian education and upbringing of the child. It is a serious and dedicated responsibility.

What would it be like to be the Godparent of Jesus?

We look to Jesus as our example, the one we should emulate. What would it mean if we were to be the example to a child Jesus? How would we act and respond to situations knowing Jesus was watching, that his development into a future Messiah was in part dependent upon the example we were setting?

It is a reversal. Scripture is full of reversals. The rich become poor the poor become rich. The blind see, those with sight are not able to ‘get it’. This is a reversal that places a whole different role for Christians. We have to rethink what we want a Messiah to know and to do.

How does one raise a Messiah? Would we teach him to love his enemies? Would we set the example of keeping people from enforcing the letter of the law and substituting it for compassion and forgiveness?

In the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we have a tradition of dedicating our parents and congregation to raising our children in the faith and loving them regardless of distance or circumstances.

Sunday we recognized Logan Davis as our graduating Senior this year. There were many kind words expressed and confidence in his future. He is a product of his family but he is also ours. Each child, each young person is part of the congregational family. And with each child we have a responsibility because all of us are God-parents in this congregational family.

Blessings to Logan and blessings to all who have the responsibility of raising and loving our children.

Rev. Larry Metzger
