… on how they will know us

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35)

“The Spirit told me… not to make a distinction between them and us” (Acts 11:12)

Both scriptures are from two weeks ago. Both can create radical change in the church… if we actually hear and practice the Word.

Peter receives this new revelation in Acts. He struggles with being a Jewish and following in the Way of Jesus. Jewish customs and cleanliness laws restricted one from entering the home of a Gentile.

A Gentile’s home very probably was unclean since they did not observe the dietary and other rituals. The word and the laws are more accurately pure and unpure. They have to do with spirituality and not issues of health. It meant they must undergo purification before they can reenter the community, perform religious functions and possible expulsion from the land. They could not enter the temple and had to stay far away from the Tabernacle.

Following Peter’s dream concerning animals and the voice telling him what God creates is good and not unclean, Peter has a great change in this theological understandings.

However, the Jerusalem followers were not happy with Peter embracing Gentiles (the ones who did not observe Jewish purity laws). In other words, the non-Jewish followers (Christians) were being treated the same as the Jewish followers.

The ‘Gentiles’ of today are the homeless, the transgendered, the undocumented… well, you know the list. What do you imagine the word of God would be in a vision to us about who is pure and who is not?

In John, Jesus makes it clear how others with know who are his disciples. He does not say we are to give Bibles away, stand on street corners and shout words of fear and condemnation. It is really very simple.

They will know Disciples of Christ by our love for one another. In reading ‘one another’ one must go to other scriptures to understand who ‘they’ are. That is, we are to love as he loved, preventing the stoning of an adulteress, eating with ‘sinners’ and promising a place for a criminal on the cross beside him. How are you demonstrating the one you follow?
