Her children rise up and call her blessed.

Proverbs 31:28

… Names are Important

God is known by many names. In the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Testament there are many names, each of which depict aspects of God’s nature. Some are more characteristic like “Hiding Place” (Psalm 32:7), or “Rock” (Habakkuk 1:12). Beyond the Jewish and Christian faith, there are many other names for God.
We have many names; some very flattering and others not so much. However, when they are mentioned, we know to whom it refers.
Our names are by tribe, clans, nation or ethnicity. They are by religious tradition or certain regions.
The names are very important to us because they are more than a moniker to know when one is speaking to or about us. The names give us a great sense of belonging.
I am a Christian, a citizen of the United States of North America, a Kentuckian by birth, raised in Louisville, a large city and a person of German and Irish origins. My name is musician, preacher, father, husband, son, brother and even more.
All these are more than nouns, they are adjectival in that they give a picture of a person.
Christian is not a unique descriptor for there are many kinds of Christians. All are trying to follow in the way of Jesus, but it is in their interpretation of Jesus’ Way.

Some are very stern and legalistic. Others are very compassionate and forgiving. Many are somewhere in between. But it would be a great mistake to use the name Christian and think it covers all of us. There are, in fact, times I am embarrassed to be called a Christian because of behavior I witness in the name of Jesus.
There are other times I see Christ in the actions of those who wear very different names.
Billy Graham, on Robert Schuller’s Hour of Power in 1997 said the following:
I think everybody who loves Christ, or knows Christ, whether they are conscious of it or not, are members of the body of Christ …. That’s what God is doing today. He is calling people out of the world for his name, whether they come from the Muslim world or the Buddhist world or the Christian world or the nonbelieving world, they are members of the body of Christ because they have been called by God. They may not even know the name of Jesus, but they know in their hearts that they need something that they don’t have and they turn to the only light that they have, and I think that they are saved and that they are going to be with us in heaven. (Context: Martin E. Marty on Religion and Culture, November 1, 1997)
(I think Franklin Graham needs to revisit his father’s theology.)
I would like for compassion, givers of mercy, peaceful, forgiving, people who show kindness to strangers, welcomers… just a few of the words I would like to come to mind when someone calls me a Christian.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped with the Easter Egg Hunt this year! I overheard quite a few parents from the community commenting about how nice it was and how well organized, and I am so grateful to serve with a group like you all. I want to especially thank CWF this year because of their dedication in donating funds to buy craft supplies and for taking time out of their busy schedules to help cut out paper and prep the materials needed for the crafts the kids did during the Easter Egg Hunt. I am so thankful to have a group of ladies dedicated to the children helping the Christian Education department! Thank you for those of you who had time on Friday night to help me set up, your assistance was invaluable! Thank you to everyone who helped work at the craft tables, Addison and Lucy Davis for doing the puppet show and to Addison for being our Easter bunny! Thank you to the crew who helped me clean everything up and put all the tables and chairs away. Thank you to everyone who prepared snacks for this event. I prayed and prayed for this day to be a way to show our kids and our community that they matter to us, and I was blown away by the answer I got to these prayers through your time, love, and service. Every time we choose to participate in an activity for our children, we show them that they are important, that there is a place for them here, and that this church is THEIR church family. We invest in them and pour love into them to show them God’s love. Thank you for your contributions of time, snacks, money and love. My sincerest hope is that you got to witness the kids’ wonder and joy during this event.
