A PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

What a great welcome you have given Nancy and me as we return to Oklahoma and begin a new chapter in our lives here! I’ve been asked if it is like coming home. It is. I also add that while it is like coming home, it is different. I have changed. Nancy has changed. And First Christian Church of Midwest City has changed.

In the midst of change comes the opportunity to grow. And that is where I rely on God’s call on all of our lives to bring about positive changes that will reach out to God’s people with the love of Jesus. The Gospel, if we are to live into it, will cause us to change… and change can be uncomfortable. But as followers of Jesus, comfort is not guaranteed! The cross is there to remind us that being a Christian can be difficult and sometimes even
painful if we actually proclaim Christ in our lives.

As we enter into the new future God is calling us to, my hope is that we find a way together to make our faith community appealing to others as we make it to ourselves. That may mean change for all of us. A favorite old saying that I learned from a saint of the church a long time ago goes like this:  “If you only do what you’ve already done,  you’re only
gonna get what you’ve already got!”.

These words are true for us as individuals and as a church. I look forward to honoring the traditions of sharing God’s love that are part of FCC Midwest City, and also to creating new opportunities for our congregation to be faithful to God’s call for our future. That future depends on all of us, and is dependent on each one of us showing up to do our part for the glory of God in worship on Sundays and then living out that message for the rest of the week!

So glad to be back as a part of this church and to be your pastor!

Peace,
Gary

Music Notes

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Hold o’er my being absolute sway.
Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!

In his daily devotional My Utmost For His Highest, Oswald Chambers says this:

In our Lord’s life every project was disciplined to the will of His Father. There was never the slightest tendency to follow the impulse of His own will as distinct from His Father’s will— “the Son can do nothing of Himself…” (John 5:19). Compare this with what we do— we take “every thought” or project that comes to us by impulse and jump into action immediately, instead of imprisoning and disciplining ourselves to obey Christ.

When I worked for televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, he used to preach from the scripture about presenting ourselves as a “…living sacrifice…” Then he’d say: “The problem, of course, with a living sacrifice is that it keeps crawling off the altar, and we have to keep putting it back!”

Chambers, Swaggart and the author of this beloved hymn text, Adelaide Pollard, are all trying to say the same thing, really: although God created and endowed us with what we call ‘common sense’ it is often the case that our human ‘common sense’ as we see it isn’t necessarily God’s will when it comes to Christian service.

Oof!

And, recalling Gary’s sermon last Sunday, we also get various versions of a “Promised Land” in our heads from time to time, and those also aren’t necessarily where God is leading us either.

So … what is the secret then? How do we find God’s will and know His hand of guidance? I think another verse of the hymn leads us in that direction:

Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after thy will,
while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Only when we take time to yield ourselves in stillness, waiting, with souls attuned to His Spirit and His Voice, do we truly know His will, finding strength to avoid the whims and fancies of any particular age we happen to live in.

Then –no matter how un-common-sense-ical it may seem—having heard and understood His will, it is our duty as loyal servants of Christ the King to then follow His will.

The question is: will we?
