A Word from Mike…

Ephesians 6.23-24     Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24Grace be with all who have an undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.

I struggle to find the right words in this, my final newsletter article.  I have so much to say and still there are not enough words to express all of my thoughts.  One of my ultimate goals here has been to represent scripture well and help foster a love and appreciation for the Bible.  The depth of scripture is just too amazing to take for granted!!  Personally, the love, kindness and support shown by so many of you has meant a great deal.  Serving FCC-MWC has been a great honor.  I will continue to pray for this congregation, the people in it and I am confident of the positive future for this church.  Thank you for being such a blessing in my life and of course…

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Love, Mike

An Explanation of the COVENANT OF CLOSURE:

The COVENANT OF CLOSURE is a document signed and agreed to by a departing minister and the local congregation’s leadership in regard to clergy ethics.  Some of you may have heard about this document.  Sometimes it is misunderstood, so I provided the template of the Covenant of Closure at last month’s board meeting.  There are two main points I would like to clarify through this article for the rest of the church.

Some people are under the false impression that a minister is not to have any contact with people in the congregation for one year after a new minister has been hired.  The covenant states that the departing minister will not participate in the life of the congregation for one year. Obviously I will be too far away and busy on Sundays, so I will be unable to attend on a Sunday morning.  There is nothing unethical about staying in touch.

The second point in the covenant is about a minister coming back to serve in a clergy role.  The covenant clarifies that a departing minister agrees that they will not be “making pastoral calls, hospital calls, or counseling with members, not presiding at weddings or funerals of former parishioners….except at the invitation of the current minister.”

First Feature

Sam & Jodie Ross

The story of Sam and Jodie Ross started with two military guys (one Army and one Navy) meeting and becoming buddies in Muskogee, immediately following the end of World War II. They were going to go to a dance and the Navy guy needed a date. The Army guy had an attractive little sister. They went to the dance and sparks must have flown because within two years that little sister became the wife of the Navy man.  Gene Howard was the Army guy that became Uncle Gene to everyone and Sam Ross was the Navy guy that married the little sister that became Jodie Ross.

The newlywed couple lived in Muskogee for a short length of time before ultimately ending up in the new community, Midwest City, Oklahoma, where Sam had landed a job at Tinker Field.

Over the course of their marriage, they raised their children, Steve, Randy and Debbie, in Midwest City and still reside in the home they built in 1956.  They have been members of First Christian Church for over 50 years.

During those fifty years, both Sam and Jodie have been active in all aspects of the church, including CMF, CWF, Sunday School, VBS and various departments. They cherish the lifelong friendships that they have made along the way.

Outside of the church, they continue to enjoy their time at their lake home on Lake Tenkiller, traveling, craft work and spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

They are very proud of the fact that there are four generations of the Ross family at First Christian Church and as Sam would say, “and that’s a true story”!

Join us this Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 pm for the 2018 Crop Walk at Regional Park-Garden Pavilion!

We Can Make A Difference!

This Sunday, September 30, immediately following the 2nd Worship Service, we will have a farewell reception in the JCAC. A light lunch will be served, cards will be available to write your going away messages to Mike, and we will have a chance to regale him and wish him well in his next endeavor.

For anyone who wants to help, we will be prepping food on Saturday, the 29th, at 9am, setting up the JCAC at 6pm on Saturday and of course, cleaning up after it’s over.
Any help is appreciated!

There will be some time to share a story, anecdote or imitation
and have some fun!

“Realizing Our Vision for Our Children”

Week of September 30
Galatians 3:25-29
Be a Vision of Faith!

The Light a Candle Prayer Vigil uses a different focus scripture each week related to the overall theme as we prepare for Children’s Sabbath.

We encourage you to reflect on these scriptures in prayer. Find ways to share them with the children around you, and embrace them as you move into action on behalf of all God’s children.
