A Word From Mike…

Over the past several years, most of you have heard me speak in praise of the Disciple schools that I have attended.  I am writing this week from my mother’s kitchen, about to celebrate her 80th birthday.  I am thankful that my parents encouraged me to stay close to home and attend a small college.  This weekend, I came home early, having received an invitation, and the opportunity, to play a small part in a memorial service.  The service is for a man, who is largely responsible for the gift I gained from that small college experience.

President Emeritus Dr. Robert W. Brown was servings as the president of Culver-Stockton College when I enrolled in 1986.  When he came on board as president in the early 1970’s, he brought vision and drive for excellence in education, a passionate investment in individuals, and confidence in a faith-based institution.  At that time, the school was troubled, with low enrollment and finances. President Brown asked one of the Board of Trustees members to meet with him at a nearby bank.  A plan was presented, and a bank invested in ways no one thought was possible.  The beneficiaries of that investment included myself and other alumni, who marveled at the tremendous education we felt we had received, and the quality of our staff and administration.   One man’s calling and active response, continues to lead with a legacy of blessed opportunity.

Part of my blessing was knowing the Brown family at a personal level.  President Brown’s wife could not been have more perfectly cast for her role.  She also maintained her own identity.  One of the Brown’s daughters, Jennifer, and her husband Greg, were college friends, and I had the honor of being in their wedding party.  Wonderful people, for whom I have great admiration and respect.

I realize that it is unlikely any of you ever have bet the Browns.  Still, their living witness of call and response, is one worth celebrating.  I pray not only that you have such people in your lives, but that you also will realize YOUR opportunity to be such a person.  God has created you, proclaimed you very good, and given you a call! How are you making the most of that call?

Thanks for sharing the journey,
