A Word From Mike…

As a high school student growing up in Mexico, MO I was blessed to be hired at our local three theater cinema.  The owners were an incredibly thoughtful couple who treated us wonderfully.  One neat aspect about their concession offerings was that all of their popcorn came from corn raised on their farm.  I have always loved popcorn at the movies, but this was the best popcorn ever!

My job was as an usher, taking tickets and standing at the back of the theater to monitor the audience.  Obviously I saw a lot of movies!  Every movie seemed to have something that struck my interest and the true poorly made movie was rare.

Lately with the reintroduction of the first feature articles, we have been gifted with the “movies” of the life stories of our members.  Aren’t they fascinating and insightful!  I love reading these articles and am fascinated at the lives and stories of our congregation.  Like those movies, each of your lives have points of interest, more so than you may even realize.  I want to thank all of you who have shared your story so far and I hope more of you will be willing to do the same.

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

FIRST FEATURE

Tom & Pat Padgham

Most of our “seasoned citizens” know the essence of The Padgham Story.  Tom’s mother was a charter member of FCC and his name appears on the first cradle roll.  Tom and his dad joined the church and were baptized on the same Sunday.  He and Pat were married and both sons baptized in the church on Douglas Street.  It’s challenging to find interesting facts that aren’t common knowledge among the aforementioned membership.  So, Paul Harvey’s “rest of the story” is aimed at those folks who only know Tom and Pat as members of Pairs and Spares or the couple sneaking in late to second service. ( wink, wink)

Both are proud MWC Bombers who continued their education at OU.  Pat earned a degree in Business Education and Tom finished his Business Administration degree at Oklahoma Christian.

He started an auto dealership with his dad in Del City that morphed into the family owned truck accessory business managed by Tom and son, Craig, while Pat keeps the books.  At one time, he was the youngest Toyota dealer in the U.S.  He and his dad also had several other auto franchises in the 1970’s.  Older son, Dr. Michael Padgham, serves the community at the Alliance Health Emergency Room in MWC.

Music has always been a centerpiece in Tom’s life.  Starting with a high school quartet called The Montereys, he continued his walk with the Lord in a Christian group, The Singing Disciples.  Bryan and Becky Searcy, Karen Holland and Carol Morrison were also members of this ministry. His voice is a popular addition not only in church but at many weddings and funerals.  He was well known locally for his commercials for the dealership.

Pat raised the boys (including Tommy), babysat the two grandsons and remained active in community organizations, both social and philanthropic.  Both have worn almost every church leadership hat available in the 50 + years at First Christian Church of Midwest City.

Pillars of the community, entrepreneurs, parents and grandparents AND most importantly, faithful Christians:  A VERY IMPRESSIVE LIST.

Big box stores are beginning to advertise school supplies so now is the time to stock up.  Please bring your school supply donations to church and place them in the box in the Narthex.  Outreach will get them to those who need them. Monetary donations can be placed in the offering plate.

Thank you for helping get children
back to school in style.

S.O.A.R. Update

Recently members of FCC MWC attended a workshop at the Hillwood Missionary Baptist Church in Spencer.  S.O.A.R. (Supporting Offenders to Achieve Re-integration) is a program that provides a bus three times a year to take up to 60 young people to visit their mothers at Taft Correctional Facility in eastern Oklahoma.  FCC, through our World Outreach Ministry, helps to fund these trips.

Awards were given to Bryan Searcy and Carol Hamilton for their long-time involvement with the program. Adam Davis was also given a medal for being a loyal bus driver.

Over the years many FCC members, past and present, have participated in this endeavor to see that those incarcerated have a chance to move back into society and have a meaningful life.

THANK YOU NOTES:

Dear Church Family,

I would like to express my gratitude for all of your love and support as I have dealt with my cancer these past several years. Your words of encouragement, beautiful cards and wonderful hugs have meant so much to me! I think that most of you know that I am in a clinical trial at MD Anderson and Randy and I have been making many trips back and forth between home and Houston. During my last  visit, I was encouraged to hear that both of my tumors are responding to the trial drug! I know that God is answering our prayers and I thank each of you for including me in your prayers.

It is so wonderful to have such a caring, loving church family. Randy and I feel so blessed.

Love to you all,
Lane Ross

Dear Church Family,

Thank you to everyone who participated in Christmas in July and donated towards Christmas for Others during our emphasis on Sunday, July 16th.

Due to your generosity, your gifts of time, talent and money will help many families in Eastern Oklahoma County this Christmas season.

Also, thank you to everyone who filled out the survey for volunteer opportunities. We will be contacting you when we begin planning for the CFO event.
