A Word From Mike…

Romans 12.1     I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

I have a secret confession:  Sunday evening as I prayed with the youth and their families,a small part of me wanted to be going on the mission trip with them.  In the midst of the cranky mornings, the smell of teenagers, the shared living space and sweaty work, there is a tremendous beauty to be found.  Our group of eight youth and two volunteers will have the gift of truly presenting their bodies and their efforts as a living sacrifice to God.  They will have the gift of fellowship, shared labor, and the knowledge that they have served God well.

Long before I started Project Berea in Los Cristales, N.L., Mexico, I have felt a passion for mission work.  God blessed my life with people who not only had hearts for others, but who helped me learn how I could play some small role in improving the life of another.  Finding people in need has never really been a problem for me.  Has it been for you?

As our youth present themselves as a living sacrifice, I challenge all of us to think of ways that we might do the same.  Maybe it is helping a neighbor whose fence is falling down.  Maybe it is seeing someone who could use a hand loading something heavy into their car.  In what ways can we be a living sacrifice to God? Sometimes, such tasks may seem inconvenient.  Aren’t you glad God doesn’t look at our burdens the same way?

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

S.O.A.R. and Prison Ministry News

On June 21 Mike Snell drove the church bus, and Carol Hamilton, the Rev. Chris Muse and Debbie Blanke of Nicoma Park Christian Church went along as adult sponsors for the annual summer play day at Taft Prison in Taft OK with a busload of young people going to spend the day with their incarcerated mothers. The next trip will be set during fall break from school.

On Saturday, July 14, S.O.A.R. coordinator, Cynthia Thompson and her church, Hillwood Missionary Baptist are sponsoring the second community workshop on prison ministries. This year’s emphasis is on the ministries for women prisoners. The day involves a morning coffee and workshops, lunch, and afternoon workshops with leaders dealing with issues of housing, parenting, attire for work, legal assistance, mental health, and job readiness. Last year Bryan Searcy, Shauna Becker, Sandy Harley and Carol Hamilton attended and greatly enjoyed the workshops and the opportunity to visit with those who lead these ministries.

The workshop begins at 10 a.m. at Hillwood Missionary Baptist Church, 7901 John St., Spencer, and ends at 3 p.m. There is a registration fee of $10.00, which pays for lunch, checks should be made out to Hillwood MBC.

Registration forms are available in the church office, which should be mailed in by July 11, or taken on the day of the workshop after calling an R.S.V.P. to Cynthia Thompson at 863-6540. Call Carol Hamilton (732-4336) for more information.
