Have a safe & happy holiday!
Sometime in the past few weeks, ten of the twelve books from
New Interpreter’s Bible Commentary
have been removed.
Normally this set is kept in the church resource room (Keller/Faith Matter’s Class).
If anyone knows details about where those ten volumes might be, please contact the church office.
Summer S.O.A.R. Trip
Adam Davis drove the church bus and Carol Hamilton went as adult sponsor on the summer trip taking young people to visit their mothers
in the Eddie Warrior Correction
Facility in Taft, OK on Wednesday, June 21. Five adults and 34 children and young people made the trip this time. The group left shortly after 6 a.m. from Greater New Zion Baptist Church and returned around 4 p.m.
Cynthia Thompson told us if any volunteers would like to receive certification, it would be possible to enter the prison with the young people and help to supervise the play day activities. The young people visited their mothers from9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on this trip. The next trip will be at fall break in October. Volunteers are always welcome
CONNECTING THE DOTS
S.O.A.R. Education Event
Open to All
On Saturday July 8, 2017 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. a community workshop on the subject of prison ministry will be held at Hillwood Missionary Baptist Church at 7901 John St. in Spencer. Workshops begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.There is a $10 registration fee (checks made out to Hillwood MBC). This fee covers lunch. Please contact FCC MWC for a registration form.
Directions to the church: Take Post Rd. to E. Wilshire. Turn right going east. The second left is John Street.
Between 11 – 12 awards will be presented as thanks to those who have long worked with the program. The loyalty of our church will be recognized with an award for First Christian Church of Midwest City and to Bryan Searcy and Carol Hamilton for long association with the program of taking children from ages 5 – 18 to visit their mothers in the Eddie Warrior Correctional Facility in Taft, Oklahoma.
Workshop facilitators include Senator Connie Johnson, Reginald Hines (Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Facility Administrator), Jermaine Simpson of Urban League on employment, Donna Thompson of Oklahoma State Baptist Convention Prison Ministry, Cynthia Thompson, co-ordinator for S.O.A.R, Matthew Boyland on a housing ministry, and others on anger management, helping at-risk young people, and other prison ministry programs in our area.
The S.O.A.R. program has been struggling in recent years from lack of financial support. In the past, Oklahoma City Church Women United funded the program, but the Oklahoma City group is no longer active. Cynthia Thompson, Carol Hamilton, Phyllis Byerly (long time co-coordinator for S.O.A.R.) and Sadie Mast, the latter two of Quaker and Mennonite churches, attended the State Convention of Church Women United in an effort to re-gain financial support and volunteers as well. That year the group donated $500 to the S.O.A.R. program. Currently each participating vehicle funds the gasoline and turnpike fee from their own church or other group funds. Occasionally Cynthia Thompson has to rent vans if there are not enough volunteered vehicles.
Currently, it is hoped that some financial help will come from this event as well as support from new groups to participate in the trips. But the workshop day is on various aspects of prison ministry.
