From the Office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)…

Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord Owens
2017 General Assembly Nominee for
General Minister & President of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

The General Board voted to forward the name of Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord Owens to the 2017 General Assembly as the nominee for General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

A Disciple since young adulthood, Hord Owens is currently dean of students at the University of Chicago Divinity School and pastor of First Christian Church of Downers Grove, IL.

Search Committee Chair Jackie Bunch reviewed the process for the General Board before the members of the board had the opportunity to meet Hord Owens in small groups and in the plenary. Of more than 40 people recommended last summer, nine were screened in accordance with the executive search process. Four were then interviewed in person in October by the search committee. Just prior to the General Board meeting, three candidates were interviewed by the Administrative Committee to determine which candidate to recommend to the board.

Rev. Owens is widely sought after as a preacher, speaker and workshop facilitator. Her ministry and intellectual interests include a theology of reconciliation, cultural intelligence, developing inclusive and multi-cultural congregations, and the mentoring of youth and young adults. She is married to Walter Owens, Jr., with whom she will soon celebrate 30 years of marriage. They are the proud parents of an adult son, W. Mitchell Owens, III.

FIRST FEATURE

Loleta Clark

Excerpt taken from First Features
May 2011 – August 2012

This spry (almost) charter member of FCC came to Midwest City in 1945. She has vivid memories of walking to the old church with her mother and sister from their home eight blocks away because “nobody had a car back then.” She had recently returned from two years as a Navy Wave. Most of her time was spent at Treasure Island, (near Alcatraz) California. World War II (you probably heard about it — it was reported in all the newspapers) was in full swing.

Born in Dustin, near Henryetta, she was the third youngest of six girls and two boys. Her family ran the depression era general store until Loleta joined an older sister in California. All those sailors running around Sacramento convinced her that enlisting would be the thing to do. Single girl, guys in uniform, sense of patriotism–we get the picture.

Another returnee from the war, Dave Clark, married her at our church in 1949 and they spent 43 years together. Their two boys, both OU grads, have given her to much loved daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren. Dave joined the 45th Infantry and went back into the service during the Korean War.

Loleta is most proud of her service as a Mobile Meals cook and years and years of putting the FCC Newsletter to bed and in the mail. She is equally proud of her time in CWF and can be found at early service and Keller’s SundaySchool Class almost every Sundaymorning. Loleta, we all thank you for your service to God and country.

In loving memory of Mary Loleta Clark
September 15, 1918 – April 25, 2017

It’s time to
begin planning
this year’s

Last year FCC MWC had their very first pumpkin patch, and under the organization of Ashley Dean and many volunteers, it was a big success! This year we are seeking a Volunteer Coordinator, to work with Dustin Parish who will be the Co-Coordinator.

Planning needs to begin soon, as the pumpkin supplier has asked for an estimate of the pumpkins we will need. If you are interested, please contact the church office 769-2717 or Dustin Parish (918) 637-4407.

Please submit newsletter announcements

Thank You Notes…

First Christian Church ,

Our sincere thanks go to the staff and congregation for their support as we prepared for the memorial service for our Mom, Loleta Clark. Mike was so kind to change his travel arrangements to make it back for the service, and to work with us by phone and email during the trip.

The music was perfect and wonderful and exactly what Mom loved. The lunch was excellent, and we heard many compliments. Thank you for the personal touch in the service. It was appreciated by many.

With Gratitude,
Darrel & Lucy Clark and Dave & Carol Clark
