A Word From Mike…

Social Justice and Ethnic Diversity

One of my favorite stories in the history of our denomination comes from the church that was built on the land of the Cane Ridge Revival.  Prior to 1829, the Cane Ridge Meeting House had a balcony where the black slaves sat for worship, while the white owners sat on the lower level.  However, the church members came to the realization that this was not proper.  To ensure that people would sit together for worship, they had the balcony removed altogether.  While many of our ancestors were against slavery, as a group, we still had a long journey ahead.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Oklahoma Regional Assembly/Leadership Training School.   An extra special nugget for me came during the worship time.  The speaker was Virzola Law, Senior Minister of Lindenwood Christian Church in Memphis, TN.  I have known her since before she started seminary, and feel blessed to call her friend.   Now, not only is she a successful ordained minister, she is a black female of a “lily white” congregation.  Lindenwood is quite a historic church, and the building has a hallway with photos of previous ministers, charting the congregation’s 175-year history.  The photos are similar in that they are all white males.  Well, they were similar, until they hired Virzola in 2015.

How revolutionary and exciting for Lindenwood and for Virzola!  What a witness to you and to me!

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

Mother’s Day
Sunday, May 13

Mothers are a special breed. They have many names and wear many hats. They also come in many different forms. They do so much for us but are often forgotten when it comes time to say thank you. When we were little, they took care of our boo boos. They helped teach us
important lessons about people and things we needed for life. They carted us around like a taxi to a million different activities. They loved us, even when we were embarrassed (or embarrassing). They put up with us when we were teenagers and knew “everything”. And they were there for us later when we grew up and discovered how smart they really are. Today we stand up and say thank you to all the mothers and mother figures we have in our lives. Thank you for your love, your caring, your guidance, your patience, your voice, and your listening. Thank you for so much more in all those things you did.

Can You Help With A Can?

The Mid-Del Food Pantry is in need of CANS – of food, that is.

The food pantry is down to some of the very last cans of food needed to provide for the needy. If you can help meet this need, just bring your canned goods to
the narthex of the church anytime between now and May 20. Anything would be welcome, but the pantry currently has enough corn and green beans. So, other canned vegetables, canned meat, canned fruit, and canned soup will be very much appreciated.

Thank you for supporting the Mid-Del Food Pantry!
