A Word From Mike…

2 Corinthians 2.17    17For we are not peddlers of God’s word like so many; but in Christ we speak as persons of sincerity, as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to hear Tom Padgham sing a line from an old country and western song.  While he was doing so in a joking manner, I was reminded of how much I miss hearing Tom sing.  As we all know for certain, God broke the mold after creating Tom.  I can honestly say that I don’t remember anyone singing with his style before.  Can’t you just picture Tom arranging his music at an angle on the pulpit, standing to the right of it, and grabbing hold of that wireless microphone?  Then the experience begins; Tom sings as a person of sincerity, as a person sent from God.  He would sing the same way, even if he were standing alone in God’s presence.

Sincerity.  Sincerity is what stands out most to me when Tom sings.  He believes the words he is singing, and he shares them with an intense passion.

Tom’s style is a worthy witness to us all.  To align ourselves with 2 Corinthians 2.17 and share our faith, not only sincerely, but with great confidence of the words we share.

Thanks for sharing the journey,

First Feature

David & Donna Brubaker

David Brubaker was born in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated in 1972 from Derby High School, Derby, Kansas.  After graduation, David worked as a printer. In August 1972, he decided that he wanted to venture out so he drove from Wichita to Houston on his motorcycle.

Donna McConnell was born in Houston, Texas. She graduated in 1970 from Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston, Texas. After graduation, Donna attended Massey Business College and University of Houston, earning an Associate’s degree in Legal Administration. Donna’s first job was with Southwestern Bell. While at Southwestern Bell, one of her employees told her about her brother-in-law, who had just moved from Wichita to Houston and was living with his older brother.

In August 1972, Donna was asked to meet David for a “blind date”. Really not interested, Donna went anyway. From that first lunch, we were inseparable. After a whirlwind courtship, we became engaged in November 1972 and later married on June 2, 1973. We told people that David married me because I could play the bagpipes and I married him because he had a motorcycle.

David enlisted in the Army and served from 1974-77, obtaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class as a Weapons Specialist. While serving in the Army at Ft. Riley, their first son, Brian David was born on June 13, 1974. Youngest son, Kevin Wayne was born on November 19, 1977. In 1979, David moved the family back to Wichita. Donna worked for 34 years in the legal field as a legal assistant – 10 years with the Corps of Engineers and Veterans Administration, and 24 years in private practice law firms. She retired in 2010. David is the Senior Network Engineer with Boeing Defense in Oklahoma and has been with the company for 27 years. We moved to Midwest City in 2013, when Boeing closed the Wichita Plant. David was literally the man who locked the door and turned off the lights.

We have always respected each other and each other’s hobbies. For over 30 years, we volunteered at two Military Museums – Kansas Aviation Museum and Kansas Museum of Military History for which David serves on the Board of Directors. We also buy military vehicles and restore them. David’s pride and joy is a Vietnam Era M151a2, commonly known as a “Mutt” jeep. David and his team at the Kansas Museum of Military History built a replica “gun truck” named “Business As Usual”. Donna is an avid cross-stitcher and currently embroiders using her “fancy machine”.

We love spending time with our family.  David’s mother, Betty, lives in Wichita and is 95. Brian and his wife, Cherrie (Ching) live in Wichita. Brian works for Edward Jones Financial. Ching works for Westar Energy. Kevin and his wife, Kasey, live in Firestone, Colorado. Kevin works for OtterBox and Kasey is a stay-at-home mom. They have two children, Kyndra who is 17 and Andrew (Andy) who is 13.  We also love volunteering and helping at the church. David is an elder and is on several committees. Donna is a Deacon and cooks for Mobile Meals and is currently Group Leader for Group II of the CWF.

The Worship Department is seeking monetary donations towards Minister Appreciation Month. If you would like to contribute, please see Chris Miller. We will also be visiting the Sunday School classrooms this Sunday to get the word out. If you would like to give a “gift in kind” please be sure to designate it as such in your offering.

Betty Martin’s children (Jackie, Kathy and Bill) are asking that we participate in a card shower for Betty in honor of her 90th birthday, on October 18th. They also suggest you might share a photo to help her put names with faces, since she is struggling with dementia.
