A Word From Mike…

I would like to offer everyone a word of thanks for their concern, prayers, cards, and other types of support I’ve been given.  Both of my parents have been incredibly caring, as well as other close friends.  Please forgive me if I have appeared distant, or have given only brief answers to questions about my health.  My experience of having a constant headache since May of 2016, and facial numbness since October of 2017, certainly has provided me with a learning opportunity.

Last week, I took my second trip to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota.  The initial Mayo diagnosis was affirmed this trip.  The term they are using is “Viral Initiated Chronic Tension Headache with Numbness.”

After having negative side effects from the previous drugs, I have agreed to try one more medication.  This drug is not an experimental drug, but it has a very small sample size.  One of the side effects of the new medication even has a potential for weight loss! Finally!!  Another potential side effect is even more memory issues.  The doctor believes this side effect is less likely because of the larger memory problems I had while taking the previous drug.  Something about the four liver lobes, how different meds process differently, and a further explanation that goes beyond my intellect.  Regardless, this is a great relief to me, after the embarrassment of having memory issues!

GOOD NEWS BOTTOM LINE:  As of today, the headaches and numbness are back to being “mild.” I am confident that my memory is going to improve!  The doctor said that even if the new drug is effective, I am unlikely to see changes for three months.  I will be returning to Mayo in six months for a follow up.   My condition is NOT life threatening, just inconvenient.  My big picture is one of being incredibly blessed!  Thanks again for the extra grace provided, and the prayers.

Thanks for sharing the journey,
Mike

Fall S.O.A.R. Trip / October 19

First Christian once again participated in the Supporting Offenders in Achieving Re-Integration trip carrying young people to visit their mothers in Dr. Eddie Warrior Correctional Facility in Taft, Oklahoma. Dustin Parrish drove the church bus and Carol Hamilton went as sponsor for the trip that began at 6 a.m. at the Greater New Zion Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. The travelers always stop in Bristow on the way to the prison, and various churches there provide a snack for the children. A nice surprise on this trip was that the church that hosted the group was Dustin’s home church, the First Baptist Church of Bristow. His parents helped serve the group delicious snacks, including wonderful cinnamon rolls provided by Dustin’s mother.
