A Word From Mike…

Matthew 26.20-22     20 When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; 21and while they were eating, he said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.’ 22And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him one after another, ‘Surely not I, Lord?’

Today, Monday, the Mid-Del school students are out of school for a teacher professional day. Benjamin Walters was spending his morning off helping grandfather Joe Greffin deliver Mobile Meals. They were spending a few minutes in my office when I asked Benjamin what he thought I should write about for my newsletter article. He suggested loyalty to your loved ones. First he made reference to Judas not being loyal to Jesus and then made reference to Sunday’s sermon about Jonah not being loyal to God.

I thought it was interesting to hear the concern about loyalty from a middle school student. When a young person grows up in our country today, what do they witness from their surroundings about loyalty? Loyalty to our government? Loyalty to family and friends? Loyalty to humankind? Loyalty to God?

In a world that is full of chaos, anger and division, what type of an example does our church set? I hope that young people in our church, like Benjamin, see in our congregation authentic people who strive to be appropriate loyal to God.  The more loyal we are to God, the more in line the other loyalties will fall. One thing we may not do intentionally enough is truly asking ourselves the question of how we can be most loyal to God. We all may have quick, off the cuff, responses…but when is the last time you prayed about how to be the most loyal to God? If questioned about our lack of loyalty to God, how quickly would we say, “Surely not I, Lord?”

If we all prayed in that fashion individual and as a congregation, how might our church be different?

Thanks for sharing the journey,

FCC Youth
