A Word From Mike…

Proverbs 11.24     Some give freely, yet grow all the richer; others withhold what is due, and only suffer want. Over the past few months, I have been blessed with two “character building” opportunities, with two different airline companies.  One involved a flight delay which made my trip pointless; the other was the refusal to make a flight change on a work trip for Dustin.

Watching how angry, screaming people look at airports, has helped me to have a more compassionate response.  Therefore, during both of my “character building” opportunities, I decided to speak directly, but kindly.  Initially, both scenarios came to a point of conclusion when I was told nothing could be done to help.  I played the game long enough to get to speak to a supervisor. Finally, the airline with the flight delay ended up sending me a $75 gift card for my inconvenience.  The other company returned $100 to Dustin’s church credit card.  Although we had to go through quite a process, both companies ultimately gave us a “kind gesture” gift.

Most of you have had situations where you have had to jump through hoops to get what someone already had the ability to give you.  Why can’t people and businesses just be generous? You and I would never make others jump through such hoops, right?!?

Well…maybe not, except when to comes to tithing.  God has provided enough for us that we have something to give back, but we are sometimes slow to be generous.  Generous with the church, and generous with the world.  Things like: The church needs paint for a room, but we really love a new pair of shoes that have just come out; or We deserve a raise at work, but since we aren’t getting one, we will just cut back on our church giving.  Before you think I am sounding too self-righteous, I must confess that I used to be a poor giver to the church.  Coming up with justification for not giving a tithe, or giving generously to God, is an easy thing to do.  Those justifications become obstacles to our faithfulness.  The more generous I have become over time, the more I appreciated the needs of others.  I find that when I become generous, it feels so good that I often end up being more generous than I had originally intended.  I am not a wealthy individual.  However, I am confident that I am richer in many ways when I am generous.  I pray for this type of wealth, for each one of you.

Thanks for sharing the journey,

A Note from the Stewardship Committee-

2018 Giving envelopes will soon be ready to disperse to our members.

Just a reminder, we ask everyone to donate $5 towards the cost of this purchase.

For 2019, the Stewardship Committee has decided to offer the box sets for our members and not the mailable, booklet style. This change still serves the needs of
our congregation, while at the
same time reduces cost and eliminates unneeded waste.

See Cindy Schaefer if you have any questions.
