Weekly Newsletter 1.20.2021

What do I have here?

A blanket; I like several things about this blanket!

First it was made by someone that I love very much.

I appreciate that she chose such soft fabric, in a color I adore and with bicycles on it because she knows I like to ride my bike.

Looking at this blanket makes me feel that I am loved; it keeps me warm on the inside and the outside.

I bet we all have a blanket that we love.

But what if you had no blanket, no home, no place to rest at night even when it is bitterly cold?

A blanket would help wouldn’t it? To insulate your body from the cold ground.

To wrap up in to keep out the wind. To build a tent out of to shield you from the weather.

I believe that we can all support the need for a gift to an organization that provides blankets to others in need. Church World Service is such an organization.

Each CWS blanket is only $10.00 but can be a vital and powerful resource for someone needing a little support, warmth, and encouragement.

Sunday January 24, 2021 we will take an over and above offering, that means that we will give EXTRA money to send to Church World Service to buy blankets so that we can show God’s love to others by taking care of some of his children. I am hoping we can count on you to keep our neighbors’ a little warmer this year.

Please mark your gift Blanket Sunday.

Thank-you,
Outreach

YOUTH

The Youth have been meeting in a variety of different ways. As you continue to find new ways to stay active and involved in a life that has changed dramatically over the last year, I pray you find yourself involved with God in new ways! This is the perfect time to start a new devotional or Bible study. It’s also a great time to reach out to old friends and neighbors. Write a letter to a family member or make that phone call you’ve been putting off. You never know what a big difference one small gesture can make to someone!

Prayers of encouragement for you all!

Message from Reconciliation Ministries at the DOC General Office:

“We realize that we stand surrounded with the mountains of love and we deliberately dwell in the valley of hate. We stand amid the forces of truth and deliberately lie; We are forever offered the high road and yet we choose to travel the low road. For these sins, O God, forgive. Break the spell of that which blinds our minds. Purify our hearts that we may see thee.”
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
September 6, 1953

The Reconciliation Ministry in partnership with Disciples Justice Ministries, invites Disciples to join in 21-days of prayer beginning Sunday, Jan. 17 continuing through Feb. 6.  This season of prayer is intended to honor our faithful witness and our spiritual conviction to “love one another” as Christ’s has loved us.  As we commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 18, we resonate with the vast repertoire of action and advocacy for racial and social justice that continues to inform our ministries of justice and racial reconciliation today.  To launch this season of prayer, we will post written and video prayers daily on the social media outlets of Reconciliation Ministry and Disciples Justice Ministries.

With the backdrop of the crisis at the Capitol Building, we will also host a virtual prayer room on Jan. 19 and 20 via Zoom from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.  Participants can log in to @Reconciliationministry on Facebook to sign up as well as to participate in this 24-hour vigil.
