A Pastor’s Perspective

I’ve been battling bugs. Earwigs and others, but mainly earwigs. These creatures have a long body with what looks like a pincer…like a crab claw at the back. If I had an opportunity to ask a question of God, I might forego the big, deep question about the meaning of life and ask God “Why earwigs?”

I regularly spray a perimeter control around the outside of the house to keep them out, and many times see earwig bodies around the landings at the front door, back door, and garage door. I sprayed a few weeks back, and began to notice fewer earwig bodies at the doors. Then none. I went back to get my trusted “death to bugs” spray. Turns out what I had sprayed a few weeks ago wasn’t insecticide. It was herbicide….weed control. Weed control does nothing to control bugs.

I purchased a new container of insecticide and sprayed the outside perimeter of the house again. Earwig bodies outside the doors once again indicate I am in control!

As people of faith, we are called to accept sometimes that we are not always in control. Sometimes we apply the wrong things to our lives, sometimes without even being aware of it. And sometimes the things we can’t stand the most come back to bother us. When we most feel we have lost control, we have the opportunity to turn to the one who we profess as our hope for the world.

Jesus came to show us that even when we apply the wrong things to our lives, there is a way to overcome those things. In John chapter 13 he reminds the disciples:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I hope that in my life, I can live out these words. They give us hope, they give us peace, and help us to connect with others to fulfill the call of Jesus in our lives.

He told us to love each other! And accept that we can’t control everything. As I sweep the bug bodies from the doorways this morning, I’m praying that that love isn’t inclusive of earwigs!
Because just for this moment, I feel powerful…..and a little bit in control!

Peace,

ACOLYTES! As the world continues to open up again, we’ve decided it’s time to start talking about having the Acolytes pick up their torch again. Yes, pun intended. I would like to reach out and ask any parents of K-6 children, if their child would like to serve as an Acolyte. If they have not done this in the past, I am happy to do another round of Acolyte training. If they were an Acolyte before and would like to be one again, GREAT! I’ll be making my way around to check in with parents, but if you know you would like for your child to be part of the group, please call/txt me at 405-818-8098 or just let me know in person.
Thank you, Chris Miller
